At the Fourth International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP IV), a once-in-a-decade global gathering on Arctic science and global affairs, Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers and youth presented their reflections on decolonizing and indigenizing research in the north. Through stories and shared aims, they challenged extractive norms and offered a powerful roadmap for change.

The speakers introduced two key publications: Comprehensive Policy Brief to the EU Commission – Roadmap to Decolonial Arctic Research (Herrmann et al., 2023) and Towards Arctic Research Upholding Indigenous Peoples’ Rights: Recommendations for ICARP IV (Holmberg et al., 2024). They offer recommendations for co-creative research practice and thus the chance to partner more meaningfully and ethically with Indigenous communities.

The session ended with positive feedback. Participants shared some of the challenges Indigenous researchers face in dominant academic and agreed about the importance of speaking about the presented topics in Arctic research planning.
